Have you ever been the victim of a facebook ultimatum?  Yes.  You have.  Trust me.  A facebook ultimatum is the lowest form of chain mail and they are generally about America/American military, cancer, animal abuse/child abuse or Jesus and they give you two choices; agree with me or you’re a bad person.  They’re generally just a big ego stroke with an additional passive-aggressive implication, accusation or fuck-you thrown in for good measure.

Americans have made great strides in equality since our nation’s birth in 1776.  The abolishment of slavery, woman’s liberation and the civil rights movement are undeniably among our greatest accomplishments as a people.  And while a woman’s right to equality in the workplace and a black man’s right to vote are now universally accepted tenants of American culture, it’s easy to forget that these rights weren’t always so obvious to many.  For example, prior to the Civil War, blacks were not permitted to marry in all areas of the United States, due to an ill-conceived notion that they were somehow less than human.  Likewise, mixed race couples could not engage in a legally recognized union as late as 1967 in sixteen states.  In regards to both of these examples, political and religious opposition was prevalent, in fact, it was not at all uncommon to hear opponents of both issues label them as “Evil”, or “Against God” but today we look back on these issues and ask “What were they thinking?”.  We, modern Americans, understand that marriage is a basic right and we should be free to marry as we see fit and be recognized as such.  …Or do we?
